A Brief Review of the Action on eBay Motors this Week
Porsche 928 Auctions that Closed 11/11-11/18/2000
Item
#495670538 1988 S4 5-speed with 69K miles for $17,600
Nice looking (ooh, those shiny tires!), low miles and 5-speed in a no-reserve auction. Only visible defect was lift at edge of dash pad. Seems like a good deal, assuming the car is as nice as it looks. Big assumption.
Item
#492525550 1988 S4 Auto with 78K miles for $17,100 (no sale)
The car looked nice, if you like blue insides. Me thinks the seller expects too much.
Item
#495814584 1988 S4 Auto with 68K miles for $15,099 (no sale)
What can you say about Dan Schmitt? This dealer just won't face reality. He has a nice low mile 88 S4 for sale at his
dealership for $23.9K. Uhuh, sure. He has run it through eBay 4 times now. Previously it closed at $16K, $18K, then $21.1K,
with the latter meeting reserve. That deal did not close for some oddball reason - perhaps the bidder woke up and realized he made a mistake. Good luck, Dan. There is
another dealer in Illinois that has been trying to get
$29K (recently dropped to $27.9) for a 33k mile 89
5-speed. Good luck to both of them. These are probably very nice
cars, but get real.
Item
#496684654 1987 S4 Auto with 91K miles
for $14,900 (no bids)
This sincere fella and 928 fanatic, Matt Preslaski,
re-listed his 87 S4 after it failed to meet reserve with a final bid of $14,999
after 34 bids. The re-list, with a $14,900 minimum attracted ZERO
bids. Look at his description
of the car on his website! Whoa! This car has been gone through
nicely. Check his work
records. One more try Matt, but I think $14,999 was about it.
Item
#489365770 1989 S4 Auto with 96K miles for $14,600
Sharp looking black and light gray California car didn't
draw a lot of action, and the final bidder was there pretty much on his
own. I think I ran the VIN and it was OK and showed its CA lifeline to be
true, so I am not sure what might have turned people off. Maybe the dealer
was snotty.
Item
#490428193 1987 S4 Auto with 70K miles for $13,800
With its silver on lipstick red, I thought this car was pretty attractive.
Too bad it wasn't an all leather interior, as the black console and dash look a
bit weird in that sea of red. Jerseyman2000 sells all his
cars no reserve and with a low entry bid ($1,000 in this case). Would you
sell your car this way? Pretty scary, I'd say. If it is as nice as
it looks, always a big disclaimer, this is another good deal. Who
knows? It probably has been raced and needs a torque tube and $5K in other
repairs. :-) This car was the subject of our "bet on the closing
bid" contest on the 928 Message
Board, won by Dan Barnhill, who should be
gluing together his prize (a "rare" Fujimi 89 928 S4 1/24th scale
model) right now.
Item
#490211606 1986 928 S 5-Speed with 49K miles for $13,000
The kids sold Dad's 928 (out from under him?) and even included an $800 credit
for the non-working A/C. Why not just give it away, kids? Jeez, a
low-mile 86 5-speed for $12.2K? The car was very nice looking, although
rainy days cover a lot of flaws. Unfortunately, CarFax showed this car had
led a checkered life. It had been given a salvage title in 1993 after a
front end collision, was rebuilt and sold at auction a few months later, then
subjected to another salvage title in 1995, with no records since.
Everything looks in the right place in the pictures, and the kids swear there
are "no wrinkles." Makes you wonder. The bidder at $13K
had no last-minute competition.
Item
#490839225 1987 S4 Auto with 106K miles for $8,500
This car had what sounded like a few very minor scrapes and the stereo amp
didn't work. Another example of poor marketing. Fix the damn dings
and the amp and take some more glossy pictures! Nice chrome rims.
Item
#491147874 1986 928 S Auto with 94K miles for $7,100
Bidders stayed away from this car like the plague. Was it the blue
interior or the dash cracks? Only Markk14, the new owner, knows.
Item
#490474682 1983 928 Auto with 80K miles for $6,500
The seller did well for a brown leather car with a few scratches, dings and dash
cracks. Oh, and a little accident report on the title search.
Item
#486456834 1984 928 S Auto with 91K miles for $5,810
So it has 8-10 dings, a couple of larger paint chips, a lengthy dash crack, 79
cams, "a slight jump when giving it gas when starting. (The kick down
cables need adjusted)" (sic), and the interior color combination looks
suspiciously goofy, somebody has a 928 that was no longer loved or wanted by the
PO.
Item
#491262048 1981 928 Euro 5-speed with 152K miles for $2,825 (no sale)
Holy Mother of Maico, use some masking tape next time before you pull out your spray
gun! Kinda nasty looking, jacked up in the rear. Oh, "AC needs
looking into. The orriginal (sic) checker board interior needing
work" You're kidding.
Item
#491674327 1980 928 5-speed with 174K miles for $2,575
"Dent in right quarter. Runs Good!! Warning lights on. Has been
repainted." That's a nice "dent" you got there.
AND THE WINNER FOR OVERLOOKED DEAL OF THE WEEK:
Item
#494729532 1986 928 S Auto with 58K miles for ?? ($10,000 minimum) NO BIDS!
Jeez, what happened here? Other than the fact the seller mis-categorized
the car as an "Other" model Porsche, this looks like a winner.
Red with black FULL leather interior, very low miles, chrome wheels, and it's in
Bend, Oregon, where I got my great deal of a 928. If I had another space in
the garage, I would have called my PO and had him look at it for me.
