COMMENTARY
There have been a lot of examples that emphasize BUYER BEWARE lately, such as the listing below warning of fraud (Ebay suspended this seller based on my report). Shill bidding was apparent in at least 2 cases. There was quite a wide selection of cars this week, with several Euro cars, a GTS, GT, and numerous low mileage cars. Close examination of some of the cars showed a lot more defects than were revealed in the ads. Look at this one.
I started to include retail Blue Book values a few weeks ago, based on the 94507 zip code, where I live (Alamo, CA). Based on testing several cars, it appears Kelley divides the US into West and East halves, as shown here with figures for an 87 928 with 90K miles, all states inside each half having the same value. Invariably, the states in the West were higher. The increment varies with make, model and year from 11.6% to 20%. So, in the middle of this week I began to display East and West values.

Kelley Blue Book values shown are retail and only
adjusted for mileage and options or upgrade. Values for West and East
regions are shown with location of car underlined. West is always higher,
and the percentage difference is indicated. Blue Book online only goes
back to 81. For older cars I may include NADA, but I find NADA numbers way
out of line on older cars.

This is the 4th Weissach on eBay in the last 6 weeks, and the 2nd from San Diego. This could be the nicest of the bunch. Appears to have the original wheels. Carfax shows only 8K miles in last 5 years. |

Honest ad admitting paint is weathered and sun damaged and looks better in
pics than in real life - first person I've seen admit that pics always make
paint look better than it is. Notes some engine noise and rough idles,
although may not be easy to fix as suggested. There is no valve
adjustment. Could be an inexpensive entry for someone, but motor issue
needs assessment.
Update: Missed that this car had just closed last week as sold. Hardly noticed it the first time. |

Exterior looks like might be a re-spray, considering 130K miles. No
VIN provided. Looks sharp enough in pics. Not sure where he gets
the 340HP claim.
Update: As a visitor to the message board pointed out, the fog/driving light are early model style. This hints strongly that there was a front end (at least) accident, and the older, cheaper lamps were put in. |

Mephisto Motors has some pretty strict bidding rules here, including no
inspections until you have paid in full. I know they have been burned
a lot by flaky bidders, but they have asked for it at times by
over-hyping the cars. They love to sue non-performing bidders. I
have no problem with their zero feedback bidder policy, but the rest is way
overdone.
As to this specific car, the photos, done with the sun behind a cloud, make the paint look wonderful. The driver seat is not original, as it is missing the contrasting piping. In fact, I know form this feature that I have seen this car before in auction - I will track it down later. The dash and console is very wavy and wrinkled - most likely leather is pulling back (leather is glued over vinyl). I'm sure parts of this car are original. Remember - you don't get to test drive it until you pay for it! Despite all the legal jargon and threats, they don't say what they will do if the car is not as represented or has a significant defect. |

The 18 months in Hawaii when it was not garage kept seems to have had an effect - dash and seat cracks (not pictured). Sounds typical for an 80, including synchro problems. CAUTION: THIS APPEARS TO BE FRAUD!
This car has been "sold" repeatedly, the last time less than 2 days ago. Now it shows up being sold by the winning bidder from the previous auction. If you go back though all the previous sales, you will see nearly all the bidders have zero or 1 feedback. This is very suspicious. Certainly, seeing the car being sold by the new owner less than 2 days after it closed and in a different state with no change in mileage (eh, broken odometer) should tip you off that these guys are up to no good. I have reported this to eBay and asked the seller to pull down the ad. Note the new ad shows an 87 motor. The motor issue was picked up by a Rennlist 928 mail list member who also noted this was the same car as Item 537169724. I came to the easy conclusion that this looks like shill bidding, as I suspected on the previous close way over Blue Book. As I said then, "Closed way over book to a zero feedback bidder (flake or shill). Bet we will see this car again." Hee, hee. As someone pointed out on one of the message boards, check out the lug nuts in this pic. Wheels have been spray painted...on the car! Also, shift knob appears gone in this pic. |

Interesting direct underside shot. If you blow it up, you can see a fair amount of corrosion from Toronto winters. No interior views. Could be due to low resolution shot, but engine compartment looks winter worn as well. GTSs may be rare, but I have a hunch this one may not even get any bids. |
