Cooling your Banshee
The Banshee runs incredibly hot. Just try putting you
finger on the heatsink for more than a fraction of a second. Yikes! If you
have room you could screw a small 486 CPU cooling fan into the heatsink fans. That
will work. Or you could replace the heatsink with a TennMax Lasagna fan. The original heatsink is
glued pretty tight, but I think it will pop off with a little leverage if you heat up the
card first. Do you need to do this? Ehh. I haven't seen any heat-related
anomalies, although others definitely have, and the trend with video chips lately, like
the TNT, has been to put out phenomenal amounts of heat. Some manufacturers are
shipping with fans already. Anything to get the air moving around the card would
help.
Heat-related problems have been reported by others
consist of visual anomalies, freeze ups or crashes developing after the system has been
used for a while or several minutes after a game has been launched. Consistent
crashes at the exact same point in a game or application would not be a clear sign of
heat-related problems. To verify the problem, remove the computer cover temporarily
and improve the circulation of cool air. If the problem is reduced or
resolved. Take measures to improve case and Banshee ventilation. Another option is
to reduce the graphics clock settings, available in many Banshee display utilities.
